A personal project in which I undertook research into movies (old and new), stories, existing shows and books with the aim to discover one that would or could benefit from a new Title or Credit Sequence. I then created a sequence for it from scratch in my desired genre and style (of course; Sci-fi).
I found a movie from the 1920s, ‘The man from beyond’ starring Harry Houdini. It seemed perfect.
Using the basic premise of the old movie as a starting point, I modernised and rewrote the narrative, and then began my style, feel, design and sound research and production from there.
I also produced a DVD menu and movie poster.
Some assets were kindly donated for use in this project and their contributors need to be acknowledged.
Firstly, Cheryl E Leonard- allwaysnorth.com, donated some of her fabulous field recordings of moving ice lakes in Yosemite National Park…suitably creepy sounds.
Secondly Paola Bassetti from The Institute for Mummies and the Iceman granted permission to use their hi-res scans of Otzi the ice man, an actual mummy, who was found preserved in ice in the Austrian Alps after approximately 5000 years. What an amazing website to look at and an ideal character.
Thirdly, my good friend Julienne Loppacher donated some beautiful photographs from her many hikes in the Swiss Alps that were perfectly suited to the mood and theme of the sequence.
Other sourced assets were from dafont.com, some ice textures from outsidethefray.com and commons.wikimedia.org, and ice sounds purchased from pond5.com.
I created all other assets, animations and sound design for the sequence with Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Audition.
Who knows, this updated story idea may become a movie one day?
That would be nice…I'd better be involved though. :)
